How is TelPhone different from my current local line?

TelPhone is a leading edge technology that allows High Speed Internet to be used as a phone line. It works virtually the same way as your current local phone service; it has a wide selection of local features and can be used with a standard phone set, however it is much less expensive.

I have a DSL Lite service. Can I still take advantage of TelPhone?

Yes. TelPhone is available for DSL Lite users.

What is the “Additional Number” service?

As a TelPhone customer you can select one or two additional phone numbers, attached to the same phone line. This service could be used as incoming fax line or to allow your family and friends from out of town call you locally (see the question below). Outgoing calls are billed as if made from your main TelPhone line.

Do I need to turn my computer on to use TelPhone?

No, TelPhone does not require a computer. However, TelPhone allows you to talk and surf the Internet at the same time.

How to improve the low speed of my Internet connection?

Usually the High Speed Internet plans from different providers are configured to provide a maximum modem capability of 5.0 – 6.0 Mbps download and 200 – 400 kbps upload. However, actual speeds online will vary with Internet traffic, server and other factors. The most common cause of your Internet poor performance is a poor shape of your PC’s hard and/or software. There are some possible steps to improve the speed of your Internet:

  1. Check your PC configuration. You may have insufficient memory or underpowered processor which is a potential problem area.
  2. Check your antivirus program settings and updates. Do not use shareware programs of that kind, in case of doubts about the reliability of your antivirus, use suggested for free software from the website of your current provider. Activate daily quick scan and weekly full system scan, scanning all incoming and outgoing mail.
  3. Check the fact your Windows update system is on. Regular updates usually include modernization of the security parts for your operating system.
  4. Uninstall all programs downloaded from the Internet for free.
  5. Deactivate all programs that may use background or hidden Internet connection (video and music downloaders, communicating programs, file sharing etc.).

Can I keep the service if I travel?

Yes, in most of the cases you can keep your service and your phone number when you travel, domestically or abroad. All your calls will be treated the same way as if made using TelPhone at your home. For example, if you travel from Toronto to Montreal or London, you can take your service with you, plug into High Speed Internet there, and make calls as if you were still in Toronto (i.e. you can still be reached at your 416 # or you can call their 416 # and neither party would be charged long distance). Due to the different network setup, there are cases when equipment must be reconfigured.

How to check the real speed of my Internet connection?

Using your computer start the cmd program: Start => Run => cmd (for Windows Vista Start => Search => cmd). When a new window for this program appears type a command: ping sip.compass-inc.net -t. Then you will see the table similar to provided below (to stop the process press Ctrl + C buttons):

  Reply from 66.244.249.84: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=55

If the difference between the maximum and the minimum round trip times is comparatively small (e.g. minimum=10ms and maximum=32ms) it means you Internet connection is acceptable. Can I use the Internet and the TelPhone at the same time?

Yes, however if you use peer-to-peer file sharing programs you might have to limit upload speed or you may experience loss of voice quality.

Yes, as long as your Internet connection can support it.

Does TelPhone work with all types of High Speed Internet connections?

TelPhone can work with virtually any always-on High Speed Internet service: DSL, Cable or Satellite and most wireless ISPs.

Can I transfer my current phone number to TelPhone™?

Currently you can transfer any landline phone number to TelPhone™ within the available service area. Please call to inquire.

Does your TelPhone service include 911 or 411 service?

411 service is available but incurs 1$/call charge. 9-1-1 Service is available but has limitations. TelPhone looks and appears to work like a phone, however it is different in that it connects to the Internet, not a telephone line. There are several important factors to consider regarding the impact of this service on your emergency calls. The type of 9-1-1 Service available to you depends on where and how you use your TelPhone service.

Can an Additional number have a different area code than my main TelPhone number?

Yes, this is possible. Please note that all your outgoing calls are billed as if made from your main TelPhone number.

Are there wireless TelPhones available?

Currently they are in product testing stage. Once they become available it will be announced at Telx’s web site.

Can I use fax with your service?
